MCC: Court of Appeals Sets Date for Oral Arguments in the Challenge to Missouri's Pro-Life Law

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals has set a date for oral arguments in the legal challenge to HB 126 - the "Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act.” The arguments -- which were originally scheduled for April but were postponed because of the pandemic -- will occur during the week of September 21 - 25. The appeal is from two lower court rulings that block certain provision of the 2019 law, including the ban on abortions at eight, 14, 18, and 20 weeks gestation and a ban on abortions due to a Down Syndrome diagnosis. The 8th Circuit's review may take into consideration the recent Supreme Court decision in June Medical Services v. Russo. The 8th Circuit recently removed an injunction on four Arkansas abortion regulations based on the concurrent opinion from Chief Justice John Roberts in June Medical. In his opinion, the Chief Justice reaffirmed that states have "wide discretion to pass legislation in areas where there is medical and scientific uncertainty."

Project Rachel, an abortion healing ministry of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, will offer a Day of Spiritual Reflection for any woman wounded by abortion. The day of reflection will be held in a confidential, prayerful setting in the St. Louis area on Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Marisol Pfaff, Project Rachel coordinator and certified spiritual director, Fr. Thomas Pastorius, pastor of St. Joseph Parish (Manchester) and Project Rachel chaplain, and Cynthia Haehnel, Respect Life Apostolate director, will help participants realize the hope, love, and mercy of Jesus Christ.

Encourage those wounded by abortion to accept this opportunity for healing by contacting 314.792.7565 or stlprojectrachel@archstl.org.
